Estrogen dominance refers to an excess of estrogen relative to progesterone. This condition can occur in women during the reproductive years, but tends to be particularly symptomatic for women in the peri-menopausal and menopausal years. This is due to the fact that estrogen dominance is worsened by women not ovulating, exposure to a higher estrogenic environment, or women not metabolizing estrogens correctly.
High estrogen or estrogen imbalance is associated with various clinical symptoms and conditions including:
1. Hot Flashes
2. Irregular Bleeding
3. Night Sweats
4. Mood Swings
5. Anxiety
6. Weight Gain
7. Decreased Libido
8. Headaches
9. Vaginal Dryness
10. Itchy Skin
13. Fuzzy Thinking
14. Tender Breasts
15. Depression

Beginning in the fourth decade of life, declining androgens (male hormones) and imbalances of related hormones bring on the symptoms of aging in males referred to as "Andropause," the equivalent of menopause in women. Testing hormone levels can be utilized for early detection of undiagnosed hormone imbalances (specific excesses and deficiencies) linked to increased risks for prostate disease, low sex drive, premature aging, and poor quality of life.
The testes produce nearly 95% of all male testosterone. The balance is supplied by the adrenal glands. They also produce small amounts of estrogen. The brain produces the pituitary hormones follice stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) which trigger hormone production from the testes. As a a man gets older, testosterone levels fall and estrogen levels tend to rise. Lower testosterone levels may affect bone density, muscle strength, body composition, or sex drive. The imbalance that occurs when testosterone is low in relation to estrogen may also contribute to prostate problems.
Symptoms of andropause:
1. Bone Loss
2. Decreased Mental Clarity
3. Decreased Muscle Strength
4. Decreased Stamina
5. Decreased Urine Flow
6. Depression
7. Erectile Dysfunction
8. Hot Flashes
9. Increased Abdominal Fat
10. Increased Urge to Urinate
11. Irritability
12. Low Sex Drive
13. Mood Swings
14. Night Sweats
15. Poor Concentration

At Pallimed Solutions, we specialize in hormone replacement therapy.
Here's what makes us different.
As a collaborative pharmacy, we work with you and your doctor to prepare hormone replacement therapy that is tailored to your individual needs. We are able to compound hormones in a variety of forms and will work with you until we find the formulation that is right for you.
Balanced Bioidentical Hormones vs. Synthetic Hormones
Instead of traditional synthetic hormones, we specialize in compounding balanced bioidentical hormone replacement therapies. Hormones are considered bioidentical because they are the exact duplicates of those that your body naturally makes. Unlike synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are individually prepared to fit the needs of each patient.
In a Women's Health Initiative Trial, Conventional hormone replacement therapy using synthetic hormones showed increased risks of stroke, heart attack, breast cancer, blood clots, and a possible link between synthetic hormones and Alzheimer's disease.
Synthetic Hormones Can Cause:
- Increased risk of breast cancer
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Fluid retention and edema
- Weight gain
- Blood clots
- Depression
- Increased anxiety and nervousness
- Increased risk of dementia
- Headaches
- Hair loss
- Skin discoloration
Most importantly, these synthetic hormones do not resemble the natural hormones you have in your body! There is no classic hormone profile of a woman to develop a one-size-fits-all solution, therefore it is important to individualize the diagnosis and the therapy by using bioidentical hormones.

Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and above all, accurate means of testing steroid hormones. Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between s teroid hormone levels in saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or "bioavailable." It is this fraction of total hormone that is free to enter the target tissues in the brain, uterus, skin, and breats.
Saliva testing can be done anywhere, anytime. Testing that relies on blood drawn in the doctor's office, makes it harder to obtain samples at specific times or multiple times during the day. In addition, hormones in saliva are exceptionally stable and can be stored at room temperature for up to a week without affecting the accuracy of the result. This offers maximum flexibility in sample collection and shipment.
At Pallimed, we ha ve access to many labratories for either the testing of home-completed kits or for patients to visit for on-site testing. Tests offered in the Saliva profiles include:
- Estradiol
- Progesterone
- Testosterone
- DHEA
- Cortisol
What are the advantages to using saliva testing?
- Saliva measures the free, "bioavailable," fraction of steroid hormones that have moved out of the bloodstream and into the tissue (Blood and urine measure the total levels of all hormones)
- Saliva is the most reliable measurement of tissue uptake with topical hormone supplementation
- Painless, noninvasive, and needle-free (stress associated with blood tests can alter test results)
- Private (home-collection kit) and convenient for both patient and doctor to allow for optimal collection time
- Hormones are stable in saliva at room temperature up to three weeks allowing for worldwide shipment.
- Transport of saliva samples to laboratory requires no special handling.
- Less expensive than conventional blood tessting
- Ease of collection allows for routine monitoring of hormone levels and adjustment of hormone supplementation as needed.
Why use saliva testing?
- Can help identify hidden hormonal imbalances (deficiency or excess) associated with patient symptoms of menopause and andropause as well as reproductive disorders, chronic illness, and diseases of aging
- Will link clinical symptoms to specific hormonal imbalances
- To maintain your health and prevent disease through early detection of any hormonal imbalance
- To establish treatment options to restore hormonal balance and patient quality of life
- Allows physicians to monitor patient hormone levels for "individualized" bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
- Physicans can track each patients' progress with comparative histroy reports provided with follow-up testing

Blood Spot Testing is the future of blood testing. The process requires blood from a nearly painless finger prick and several tests can be run from a single sample. Blood spot testing provides results on par with those from serum tests, but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood drawing. In addition, collection times can be optimized for the collection of baseline hormone levels, assessment of HRT dosing and treatment, or for diurnal hormone testing.
At Pallimed, we have access to many labratories for either the testing of home-completed kits or for patients to visit for on-site testing. Tests offered in the Blood Spot Profiles include:
- Thyroxine (T4) free
- Triiodothyronine (T3) free
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
- Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO)
- Testosterone, Total
- Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)
- Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
- Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1)
- Estradiol (E2)
- Progesterone (Pg)
What are the advantages of blood spot testing?
- No phlebotomist or centriguging required
- Collection times can be optimized - very important for determining early morning baseline hormone levels, testing of hormones multiple times of the day, and the assessment of HRT dosing.
- Nearly painless finger prick, simple and safe (stress of conventional blood draw can alter test results)
- Private (home collection) and convenient for both patient and doctor)
- Hormones are stable in dried bloodspot at room temperature for weeks allowing for worldwide shipment of home-completed kits.
- Less expensive than conventional blood draws
- Ease of collection allows for routine monitoring and adjustment of hormone supplementation as needed.
Why use blood spot testing?
- Identify hidden hormonal deficiences associated with aging and disease, thyroid dysfunction, and symptoms of menopause and andropause.
- Maintain optimal health and prevent disease through early detection of hormonal imbalance
- Link clinical symptoms to specific hormone imbalances flagged in testing
- Restore hormonal balance and patient quality of life using test results as a rational basis for treatment
- Monitor patient hormone levels for individualized, physiologic dosing of hormone replacement
- Track patient progress with compartitive history reports provided with follow-up testing
